Katy
I've worked as a local primary school teacher since 2001 in EYFS/Reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. During this time, I was trained in various phonic methods and schemes. However, I found that not all children were responding to how these were being taught in school and I wanted to support them better.
My own son was also struggling in school and assessed for dyslexia. After finding a specialist dyslexia school he started to enjoy learning. Inspired by this, I decided to start a post-graduate course in Specific Learning Difficulties/Dyslexia and I began my own learning journey.
Children don't all learn in the same way but by working together we can find out how your child learns best.

Hello!
Mary
Whilst working as a secondary French and Spanish teacher, I found that I really enjoyed devising strategies and making resources to help children with dyslexia learn languages. After taking on the role of Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, I decided to learn more about dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties.
Since completing an MA in Dyslexia and gaining my Assessing Practising Certificate, I now teach and assess primary and secondary children around Bristol.
I believe that all children can learn but some children just learn in a different way. My role is help them find out how.

Preparation
To reflect your child's uniqueness we tailor assessments to their individual needs.
Initially we gather information about the child's profile from parents and educators, so that we can choose the tests that are most appropriate.
Assessment
An assessment lasts around three hours. It can take place at the child's home, or at their school.
Report
Your child's detailed report will be shared with you at a mutually convenient time.
Discussion

How it works

A typical teaching programme consists of
-
An initial telephone, zoom call or face to face meeting (free).
-
A teaching programme detailing areas of support will be emailed after the first 2 weeks.
-
Personalised lessons which include 5 minutes of feedback at the end of each session if wished.
-
We ensure regular communication and collaboration with the child's class teacher (if allowed by the school) so that they know what we are working on and can suggest areas to work on.
-
We offer an end of term review with all parents, either face to face or on Zoom.
-
Meetings can be arranged with SENCOS.
What Happy
Students &
Parents Say
"It's fun seeing Katy, she plays loads of games. It helps dyslexic kids like me learn because it's teaching in a different way than normal school. I can read a little bit now which makes me feel good."
Pupil in Year 4
"Katy took time to build trust with my very nervous and reluctant son and got to know what made him tick. After years of failing to make any progress with learning to read, we have noticed a big improvement in his ability in reading and writing. We can't recommend Katy enough."
Georgina

"I can’t recommend Mary enough. She recently completed a dyslexia assessment for our son. She was very professional, hugely welcoming and immediately put our son at ease. The report she provided was incredibly detailed and has been of huge benefit to us and his teachers. We can now understand his strengths and difficulties and are in a much better place to give him the support he needs."
Jane
“My daughter thoroughly enjoys her lessons with Mary, and we have seen great progress since they have worked together. Mary is naturally brilliant with her, and this makes her relaxed and she looks forward to the lessons."
